Remy human hair is prized because the cuticles all face the same direction — which means less tangling and a more natural fall. That quality is worth protecting. A careful wash routine is the difference between extensions that look freshly fitted for months and hair that knots, dulls or sheds early.
This guide walks through the Iconic Locks wash-day ritual, from the products we recommend to the drying habits that preserve the bond and the fibre.
How often should you wash extensions?
Most wearers wash Remy extensions every 7–14 days, depending on lifestyle. If you train, live in a humid climate, or use a lot of dry shampoo and styling spray, lean toward weekly. If your scalp oil production is low and you wear your hair mostly down, fortnightly is often enough.
Overwashing strips natural oils from Remy hair. Underwashing lets product build up at the weft or tape — both shorten the life of your set.
What you need
- A sulphate-free shampoo formulated for colour-treated or extension hair
- A rich, silicone-light conditioner (or a dedicated extension conditioner)
- A wide-tooth comb and a soft bristle brush
- A microfibre towel or old cotton T-shirt
- Leave-in mist or light oil for mid-lengths to ends
Step-by-step wash ritual
1. Detangle before water
Never take knots into the shower. Section the hair and work a wide-tooth comb from the ends upward until the lengths slide freely. Support the weft or bond with your free hand so you are not pulling on the attachment.
2. Lukewarm water only
Hot water lifts the cuticle and can loosen adhesive on tape-ins. Use lukewarm water and keep the stream directed down the hair shaft, not blasting upward into the roots.
3. Shampoo the scalp; let suds clean the lengths
Focus shampoo on your natural scalp and the area around the attachments. Gently massage with fingertips — never scrub or twist the wefts. Allow the rinse water to carry cleanser through the Remy lengths; a light second pass through the mid-lengths is fine if needed.
4. Condition mid-lengths to ends
Apply conditioner from roughly ear-level downward. Avoid soaking tape tabs, keratin bonds or the sewn weft base — product residue there causes slip and build-up. Leave for 2–3 minutes, then rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear.
5. Blot, do not wring
Squeeze excess water with a microfibre towel. Wrapping wet Remy hair in a rough towel and twisting is a fast route to frizz and shed. Air-dry on a hanger or over a soft towel, or use a cool/low dryer with a concentrator nozzle once the hair is towel-blotted.
Between washes
- Brush morning and night with a loop or soft bristle brush, starting at the ends.
- Sleep in a loose braid or silk scrunchie wrap; silk or satin pillowcases help.
- Keep oils and heavy creams away from the attachment points.
- Schedule a professional move-up or maintenance visit as recommended for your method.
When to seek salon help
If you notice matting at the nape, tape edges lifting, or sudden tangling that does not improve with conditioning, book a maintenance appointment. Catching issues early protects both your natural hair and your investment in Remy extensions.
